Apple has already increased the languages iPhone supports to over 30 as of iOS 5.x<\/del>:40 as of iOS 9:<\/p>\n

English (US), British English, Australian English, Indian English, French, French Canadian, Italian, Spanish,\u00a0Spanish (Mexico), Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal),\u00a0Catalan,\u00a0Croatian, \u00a0German, Dutch,\u00a0Danish, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian (Bokm\u00e5l), Russian, Czech,\u00a0Slovak,\u00a0Polish,\u00a0Croatian,\u00a0Romanian,\u00a0Turkish, Ukrainian, Hungarian,\u00a0Traditional Chinese, Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong), Simplified Chinese,\u00a0Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese,\u00a0Arabic, Thai, Greek, Hebrew, Indonesian, <\/strong>and Malay.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Developers often ask which languages iPhone supports, but more critically, which languages should they support in their own iPhone apps? Obviously supporting all of Apple’s language choices above is costly and time-consuming, so you want to begin with the largest markets. An even more important consideration is that you’ll only be able to market your app effectively in the languages supported by App Store.<\/p>\n

Yep, the iTunes App Store supports a different set of languages than the iPhone itself.<\/p>\n

The App Store speaks a different language<\/h2>\n

Through iTunes Connect you’ll be able to\u00a0localize\u00a0your app description, keywords, screenshots and other meta data for the App Store.\u00a0I’ve previously discussed\u00a0how to write an insanely great app description<\/a>. Once you choose to localize,\u00a0those critical texts are equally necessary for users to search and find your app in Apple’s App Store. It goes without saying, Google Translate won’t cut it<\/a>!<\/p>\n

The latest addition of the\u00a0iTunes Developer guide<\/a>\u00a0lists these supported iOS languages for localization:<\/strong><\/p>\n

UPDATE 3-May-2012<\/strong>: Apple has now added support for:\u00a0Traditional Chinese, Norwegian, Turkish, Finnish, Danish, Indonesian, Malay, Thai, Vietnamese, <\/strong>and Greek.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Apple currently supports just 21\u00a0languages<\/strong> (plus 7 additional variants of English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese) for the App Store, compared with 30+ languages on the iPhone itself. This may narrow down the list of languages you want to support in your app.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Which languages should I support and localize my iPhone app into?<\/h2>\n

I’ve answered this question in a separate post<\/a>, but it bears repeating that Apple is clearly focusing its App Store on specific markets\u2014and so should you. Unless you have reason to do otherwise, the most popular languages supported by the App Store are: Spanish,\u00a0<\/strong>French, Italian, German, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, <\/strong>and\u00a0Simplified Chinese.<\/strong><\/p>\n
